June 2009
Below is an update from 2008 Defensive Player of the Year, Lauren Mateer (Dobson/Randolph-Macon):

During high school, I played lacrosse for the Red Mountain Lions for two years until I joined the Dobson Lacrosse family my senior year. I played defense, and sometimes midfield, but mostly enjoyed protecting my team’s end of the field.
After the season ended, I graduated not only from high school, but from high school lacrosse. I had decided to attend Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia, and had my eyes set on playing for the Yellow Jacket’s lacrosse team. I spoke with the coach and walked-on. If I wanted playing time however, I had to prove I could play lacrosse at the college level. This meant more physical contact, being more aggressive when going after ground balls, and playing an all around sharper game. I quickly learned what was expected of me throughout our fall ball season, as well as at our fall play day where we played teams from all over the mid-Atlantic. Not only did we go undefeated in the tournament, but I scored my very first NCAA goal!
Our 2009 season is quickly approaching. We begin on January 5th with a month of conditioning and pick up, and begin the real season on February 9th. During the season, I will play D-Wing, as well as A-Wing. I will practice every day, including Saturday mornings, with the intention of starting in a very successful season!
